Why are family office stakes hard to see?

Ownership tables only name holders above 5%. Quarterly Form 13F reports apply to institutional managers with at least $100 million in covered securities, and a smaller or differently structured office may not file one. A stake can be real and still absent from public records, which also means it cannot be confirmed from them.
